Get a vision and stay positive. That’s the message that Jon Gordon shares around the world. But how? In this TedX talk, Gordon reveals three secrets to doing it.

Key Points:

  • The number one predictor of success is “grit”, the ability to keep moving forward in the face of adversity and obstacles. Grit moves us forward, and staying positive is the foundation for that grit.
  • Without a love for what you’re doing, you’ll quickly bail on the vision that you once had. Perfect love drives out fear – and drives you toward making a greater impact through your vision.
  • Purpose keeps us from burning out and bailing on our vision. There will be days where we lose our positive attitude and lose sight of where we are headed. But those are the days when purpose needs to kick in and we realize that what we are working for is bigger than ourselves.

Talk About It
  1. What is your initial reaction to this topic? What jumped out at you?
  2. Who is the “grittiest” person you know? Give an example of their grit in action. If that person is a 10, how would you rate your grit? Share a time where you wish you could have responded with more grit.
  3. Do you love your personal life right now? What about your work or school life? What about your spiritual life? Which of these areas is impacted by fear? How can you change one of these areas moving forward?
  4. What is your personal mission statement? Has it changed in the last five years? Do you think it will be different five years from now?
  5. Mission defines your purpose in life and vision describes what your life will look like in the near future. On a scale of 1 to 10, how much Clarity do you have on your life’s mission? What about on your vision for the next few years? What can you do to get greater Clarity in either of those areas?
  6. Write a personal action step based on this conversation.
