Power is a fluid force that affects everything we do. Learn about the dynamics of power, and how you can harness it.

Key Points:

  • Power has six sources:
    • Physical Force – This is power at its most primal.
    • Wealth – Money is used to buy results or any other type of power.
    • Government – Government power can come from voting or threat of force.
    • Social Norms – This power operates peer to peer, changing behaviors.
    • Ideas – Ideas motivate people to change their actions or thinking.
    • Numbers – A unified intent creates validity in opinion.
  • Power follows three laws. First, power is never static, which means it is always accumulating or decaying. Next, power flows. Politics is the harnessing of that flow, while policy it the inhibition of it. Finally, Power compounds, or begets more power. However, the first two laws stop power from diverging infinitely.
  • To understand power, you must be able to read it. Society has mapped out and distributed power. Through understanding its source, you can understand its intentions.
  • Once you can read power, there are four steps to utilizing it – Believing you have the right to power, organizing your ideas, organizing others, and practicing power.
