Once you have your own emotions and goals in order, you can invite others into a meaningful conversation.

Talking Points:

  • Start the conversation by identifying its purpose. From the outset, establish shared goals for what each person hopes to gain from the conversation.
  • Work together to build the pool of meaning. Share your perspective with courage and empathy, and invite them to do the same.
  • Make a decision and make it work. Be clear about how you’ll move forward, and write it down if you need to.
Discussion:
  1. Initial reactions to this topic? What jumped out at you?
  2. Share a time you’ve been involved in a project or conversation that had no direction or clear purpose. What proved to be most frustrating about that experience?
  3. If you need to confront someone, what are some good goals to aim for in that conversation? How can you invite someone to share their goals as well?
  4. Define the pool of meaning in your own words. Why is it important that all perspectives are heard in order to draw good conclusions? How can you encourage someone to share their perspective more?
  5. How do you move a conversation from understanding to action? Why is it important to have movement out of a crucial conversation?
  6. Is there a step you need to take based on today’s topic?
