How To Get Coworkers Interested in Volunteering

Choose a prom look that feels exciting, flattering, and true to your style. Fresh ideas can make finding the right dress feel just as fun as the night itself.

Volunteering can bring a different kind of energy into the workplace. It gives coworkers a chance to step outside their usual roles, support something meaningful, and connect around a shared purpose. That sense of connection can make a volunteer opportunity feel worth joining before the event even begins.

The challenge is getting people interested without making participation feel like another workplace expectation. Coworkers have different schedules and causes they care about, which means one invitation will not speak to everyone. If you’re figuring out how to get coworkers more interested in volunteering, start by making the opportunity feel relevant and easy to join.

When people understand why the work matters and feel free to participate on their own terms, they have a stronger reason to get involved.

Ask Coworkers What Matters to Them

Interest grows when people have a voice in the process. Instead of choosing a cause for everyone, ask coworkers what types of community work appeal to them.

A short survey can help. Leave room for open responses instead of limiting people to a preset menu. Someone may already support a local nonprofit and know of an opportunity that would work well for a workplace group.

The goal doesn’t have to be finding one cause everyone loves. Different employees will care about different issues. A company can rotate volunteer opportunities throughout the year or invite employees to suggest future organizations.

Giving people some influence over the choice makes participation feel less like another company initiative. It also gives coworkers a reason to talk about causes that matter to them.

Remove Common Barriers to Participation

Interest can disappear when volunteering becomes difficult to fit into the workday. A person may care about the cause and still skip an event because of travel, scheduling conflicts, or responsibilities outside work.

Points of Light has identified scheduling and flexibility as barriers that can affect employee volunteer participation. Employers can respond by offering opportunities that fit different work arrangements.

Options may include:

  • A volunteer shift scheduled during regular work hours
  • An on-site project that requires little or no travel
  • A remote service opportunity for employees who work elsewhere
  • Volunteer time off that employees can use with an approved nonprofit

Managers can also share event details early enough for employees to plan around them. Last-minute invitations tend to favor people with flexible schedules, which can leave others out even when they want to participate.

A little flexibility can make volunteering feel accessible instead of inconvenient.

Connect the Cause With Workplace Values

Employees may feel more interested when the cause connects naturally with values they already see at work. A company that talks about environmental responsibility might support a cleanup or partner with a local reuse organization.

Businesses can incorporate these values into daily operations. For instance, waste reduction can be a key goal for companies aiming to manage resources more sustainably. Volunteer initiatives can support this value when they align with the company’s mission.

Employees often recognize when a company participates in events primarily for publicity. Keep the focus on the organization benefiting from the support and the significance of its work.

That connection can make the invitation feel more sincere.

Give Interested Employees Some Ownership

A volunteer program can start feeling like another assignment when one person controls every detail, and everyone else follows instructions. Shared input creates a different experience.

Invite interested coworkers to help shape the event. One employee might want to contact a nonprofit, while someone else may prefer managing sign-ups. Keep those roles optional and let people choose how involved they want to become.

SHRM has encouraged employers to give workers a voice in the causes and organizations their companies support. Employees who help choose an opportunity may feel more invested in its success.

Peer enthusiasm can help here. A coworker talking naturally about a cause often feels more inviting than repeated reminders from management. People can ask questions in a lower-pressure setting and hear why someone they know cares about the project.

Explain What People Can Expect

Vague invitations make participation harder. “Join our volunteer day” leaves plenty of unanswered questions.

Employees may want to know how long the event will last or what type of work they will do. Some may need information about physical demands or accessibility before they can decide.

Share those details early. Clear information helps people decide if the opportunity fits their schedule and comfort level. It can also reduce uncertainty for someone who has never volunteered with the organization before.

Tell participants what the nonprofit needs from the group. Explain any training requirements before the event. If volunteers need supplies, give them enough notice to prepare.

People often feel more comfortable joining when they know what the day will look like.

Keep Participation Voluntary

Pressure can drain goodwill from a volunteer program. A workplace can encourage community involvement without making attendance feel tied to a manager’s approval.

SHRM has noted that volunteer programs lose their voluntary nature when companies require participation. Employees may have caregiving responsibilities or personal commitments that keep them from joining. Others may prefer to support different causes outside work.

Managers should also be careful about how they talk about an event afterward. Thank the people who participated and recognize the nonprofit without drawing attention to coworkers who stayed behind.

A respectful culture gives employees room to decline one opportunity and join another later.

Keep Interest Going After the Event

A successful volunteer day can create momentum for another one, especially when coworkers have a chance to talk about their experience.

Ask participants what worked well and what they would change next time. If the nonprofit shares feedback about the group’s contribution, pass that along. Keep the message focused on the organization and the community it serves.

Employees can also help choose what comes next. A quick conversation after the event may reveal another cause that has broad interest.

Figuring out how to keep coworkers interested in volunteering often comes back to listening closely and making participation feel manageable. When employees have some choice and understand why the work matters, volunteering can become a workplace activity people genuinely want to join.
